Dance Hall Pimps
Here I introduce you to Dance Hall Pimps. This band was created in Los Angeles in 2009 by blues singer/songwriter RJC (lead vocals/plectrum banjo/guitar) and guitarist Jeff Jourard (formerly of The Motels). Together with Bruce Mann (keyboard/trumpet), Steve Carr (saxophone/clarinet/flute), Vic “Baron” Migenes (drums) and Eddie Fish (bass/vocals) they formed this genre-bending show band! If we were to describe their sound it would have to be mentioned the garage rock vibe mixed with New Orleans-inspired rags and romps and blues, a sound they like to call Gothspel. Well one things for certain, they don't rely on just one musical genre and create a completely new sound that I haven't heard before. Their inspirations include The Kings, Elvis Presley, Electric Flag and Rolling Stones. They are going to release their debut album, Beast For Love, on March 6th and I had the pleasure to be able to check it out on its entirely! One track that causes impression is Mommy Was A Zombie. This track makes me remember the 60s rock music with very cheerful beats. However behind this upbeat music and title, its lyrics describe a story of being raised by a drug addicted mother and without a father. So not only they have some groovy beats they also mention very serious issues through the lyrics. Seems Holy surprised me since it starts with the banjo and flute and RJC singing calmly then, jumps into the rock style :) The title track, Beast For Love, is also another favourite track of mine. I could see this song in a soundtrack of a horror movie with that twisted comedic feel that monsters also look for love. Hehe. I was surprised by this band since I never expected to listen to a record that has several genres all combined to make a very eclectic sound. You've got a bit of everything here: rock, blues, jazz, soul... So this album is quite a perfect choice to have some fun and made me feel like I was in New Orleans in a bar listening to them (let's all remember they are from LA though hehe). Several films came to my mind while listening to this record, oh the wonders that music does to one's memory! :) The album was produced by Grammy Winner Matt Hyde (Cypress Hill, Porno for Pyros) and Rob Hill (Korn, Zzibit, Cypress Hill). Beast For Love is out March 6th and there will be a release show on March 10th at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery! So if you're in LA do check them out!! :)
