Speaking about the song, Gabriela Bee said,

‘just us’ is written from the perspective of one of my favourite fictional characters that had an unfortunate romantic ending written for him. I’ve always been obsessed with fictional tropes in different fandoms, but something about this one in specific strikes a feeling for me. This song is about being in love with your best friend, someone who feels like home, while convincing yourself that wanting more is too much to ask. This quiet heartbreak lives in lingering glances, soft-spoken tones, and years of choosing one another in ways that never needed to be spoken.
