Following last month's gem Low Again, Irish guitarist and singer-songwriter Dubh Lee returns with yet another acoustic guitar-led gem called Holly Would.
Taken from her upcoming debut EP, Animals and Friends, which will arrive on April 28th, Holly Would is a heart-rending folk song that finds the talented artist exploring domestic abuse and patriarchy. This message is flawlessly conveyed through Dubh Lee's powerful, emotive vocals which are backed by a captivating production that pairs intricate acoustic guitars with solemn piano accompaniment performed by pianist Joshua Murtagh. It's a warm, dark piece of music perfect for a reflective day home alone. Check it out below!
Speaking about the song, Dubh Lee said,
Holly Would is a simple and bleak song and was written as a form of catharsis, a way for me to express some big emotions in a succinct way. The hook resolves to wordless keening and sighing. It’s a dark song but I always feel a certain release when I sing it. I wrote the melody for this song quite a few years ago and have revised the lyrics multiple times since, finally settling on these words because I feel like I finally captured what I had been trying to describe. That is, the banal psychohorror of womanhood. It hints at domestic abuse as well as systemic oppression, and ends in hopeless resignation.
