Joel Baker Unveils ‘Rupi Kaur’ Music Video
London-based, rising soulful singer-songwriter Joel Baker has just unveiled the official music video for his lovely song Rupi Kaur, the lead single from his Winter Dreams EP, out now.
The stunning video was filmed with Joel's visual collaboratior George Baxter and showcases his two "homes": Nottingham and London. Watch it below!
Although the visuals are great, it was his voice that caught my attention. The raspiness of his vocals is what made me want to listen to the song and I am happy I did. His lush, distinctive vocals flow effortlessly over a beautiful acoustic guitar-based melody complemented by delicate piano keys and string section. Rupi Kaur showcases his exceptional storytelling and vocal abilities.
Speaking about Rupi Kaur, Joel said,
One particularly dull day I got a drunk text and then a phone call from a girl who wanted to make sure I knew I was a dick. The song is called Rupi Kaur because the girl was the type to post Rupi quotes on Instagram. Fresh flowers from Columbia Rd. Oat Milk everything. Edgy and authentic gadgets from Urban Outfitters. Insta story after Insta story of fortune cookie, philosophy. For the record I love Rupi Kaur. In fact it was the girl’s “Rupi Kaur reading heart” that I was so enamoured by, but It didn’t work out.
A former Labour Party speech writer, singer-songwriter, musician and producer Joel Baker was discovered by Radio 1 bosses after sending his demos into the station in embossed parliamentary envelopes.
