understudy is driven by a cinematic saga in which teo tala is no longer the main character left to replay in his mind the confusion, nostalgia, and mental exhaustion of being left behind, capturing the painful universal reality of having to watch the one you love move on without you. An emotionally-charged song where sadness unfolds beneath energetic melodies that hide the emotional turmoil that lingers underneath. I am really enjoying how heartfelt and expressive teo tala's vocal delivery is, gliding passionately over the upbeat indie-pop production with a theatrical flair. 

 

Accompanying his gorgeous vocals we have steady drum beats nicely intertwined with intricate guitar riffs, catchy rhythms and rich textures that come together to create an overall upbeat, anthemic atmosphere that masks the emotional devastation of heartache.

Speaking about the song, teo tala said,

For a huge chunk of my life, I’ve been heavily influenced by musicals and movies, so it felt very natural for me to process heartbreak through that lens. With that narrative in mind, I specifically wrote ‘understudy’ about that post-breakup moment when you realize you are no longer the lead in someone else’s story. The song captures that unfortunate and regrettable feeling of watching that person, who used to be your everything, move on without you while you’re still stuck replaying the old scenes in your head and searching for how things could’ve gone differently.
