Jess Ball Shares New Single ‘Lately’
Melbourne-based Australian singer-songwriter Jess Ball teams up with UK rapper extraordinaire Jelani Blackman to deliver her brand new single Lately, a confident alt-pop/rap gem.
What I like the most about this song is how raw and honest it feels, with both Jess and Jelani sharing a story about acknowledging one's mistakes, recognising the hurt they've caused each other and the ways both changed. It shows that we should learn from our mistakes in order to move on and be a better version of ourselves. The contrast between Ball's heartfelt, passionate vocal delivery and Blackman's rich, effortless rap is incredibly captivating and is accompanied by a groovy bassline nicely intertwined with emotive piano keys, subtle guitar plucks, steady drum beats, delicate strings and rhythms that come together to create an overall warm, intimate atmosphere!
Speaking about the song, Jess Ball said,
I wrote ‘Lately’ about feeling regret for past mistakes as the person I am now. Sometimes I find it difficult to comprehend how I have acted in the past or the decisions I’ve made, and I suppose this is a sign of growth. Lately is about acknowledging our mistakes, and the need to accept and learn from the past in order to move on and better ourselves.
