Mikayla Menzies Unveils New Single ‘Misery’

Canadian singer and songwriter Mikayla Menzies has just shared her brand new single Misery, a powerful and poignant anthem about the complexities of physical and emotional pain, resilience, and the journey of reclaiming personal freedom. 

 

Out now via Willow Sounds Records, Misery stems from a harrowing road trip across Canada, where Mikayla found herself grappling with a mysterious illness while navigating the winding, often painful path toward healing. Misery captures the feeling of being trapped in one’s own body, while still searching for moments of solace amidst hardship. This song sounds like it was meant for me as I am also feeling trapped in my own body, dealing with several issues and pain. I like the way Mikayla shares a message of reclaiming one's personal freedom and finding strength within herself, something most of us can relate to. 

 

A message beautifully conveyed through Mikayla's gorgeous, emotive vocals which soar effortlessly over an infectious alt-pop production that pairs lush guitar riffs with cool electronics and drum patterns that create an overall warm atmosphere that embodies the bittersweet mood Mikayla experienced during her painful summer, which later evolved into autumn. 

 

The song’s music video (coming soon), directed by Mikayla herself, is an immersive experience which reflects the emotional and physical journey she undertook during her trip.

Speaking about the song & video, Mikayla said,

Sometimes, when we plan exciting things, life can have other lessons in store for us, and both of those things can be true and play out all at the same time. There is a degree of irony in the way this song has a ‘feel good’ mood, but carries such a heavy truth for me personally. I wanted to be as honest as I could while telling this story, and with the creativity and innovative perspective of my producer, Josh Hart, I really feel like we were able to execute it. The video visually represents the intensity of that road trip—how disorienting and painful it felt, yet how beautiful the release can be when we finally let go. It was important to me that the video captured the emotional core of the song.
