Erika Sirola Drops New Single ‘There Was a Boy’

Multi-talented Finnish-Canadian artist Erika Sirola shares her brand new single There Was a Boy, a stunning, eerie electronic pop gem.

Out now through her label The Gate Was Open, There Was a Boy finds the talented artist introducing us to a dark, playful, experimental sound and futuristic universe where she truly blossoms. The song reflects on the innate Jungian archetypes within us — the masks we wear and the shadows representing hidden aspects of ourselves — and explores the question of whether it's possible to find our true selves. A powerful, relatable storytelling flawlessly delivered through her enchanting, dreamy vocals that glide beautifully over an eerie, melodic electro-pop production. I am particularly fond of the way the song starts quite smoothly with an ethereal-like atmosphere before bursting with energetic beats, lush, punchy synths and a highly addictive chorus perfect to sing along to.

Speaking about the song, Erika Sirola said,
I wanted the chorus to sound like an alarm, like an intruder. The lyrics are written from the perspective of a personified mask, any of the many we wear. Perhaps it’s your ‘armour’ trying to take full control. Or like dancing with a temptress, seducing us to try on different personas in the quest for self actualisation.

Its accompanied music video, created by Sirola, incorporates nearly 2000 images, with about half of them captured by her and processed through a generative AI program. The video explores the question of whether there truly exists an authentic self beneath the various personas that you (and others) have imposed upon yourself – or if maybe you are simply the fluid energy that runs through every single one of them.
