Winifred Shares New Single ‘Want It Bad’

Australian pop up-and-comer Winifred shares her brand new single Want It Bad, the first single to be taken from her upcoming EP set to arrive in March 2024.

Out now via MNRK Music, Want It Bad is Winifred's satirical jab at the music industry and how at times it strips the passion and love of music as it creates such a transactional and suffocating atmosphere for upcoming artists. This message is beautifully conveyed through Winifred's smooth, ethereal vocals which are prominent over the juxtaposing darker instrumental undertones. Apart from her gorgeous vocals, I am particularly fond of the infectious electro-pop production that pairs expansive synths with cool rhythms and arpeggiating strings, creating an overall warm atmosphere. Speaking about the song, Winifred said,
"I wrote 'Want It Bad' at a time when the music industry, to me, felt like one big rat race. I was feeling disenchanted and torn between my love of music and having to work in an industry that feels self-serving and transactional. I was almost embarrassed by it. I was looking around me at all these hungry artists with the same ambitions and passion as me and thinking, ‘it’s no secret how badly you all want this’, which made me ask myself, ‘How badly do I want this, and what is it exactly that I’m chasing?’

The accompanying, self-directed, music video is a glamorised, ironic spin-off of a music awards TV performance shot at the Northcote Theatre in Melbourne, Australia. It captures a delicate mix of choreographed, on-stage performance and loose outdoor shots. Check it out below!
