It shows that sometimes people use a friendship to keep that person close to you, a relatable message that is beautifully conveyed through Joseph Marcus's gorgeous, soulful vocals. Speaking about the song, Joseph Marcus said,
I wrote So Much Worse about a situation where I tried to have a platonic friendship with someone immediately after dating, then I saw them with someone else at an event they had invited me to and it showed me just how not-over-it I was, and that I was kind of just using the friendship as a way of keeping close to that person without fully committing to a romantic relationship.
