Calum Scott Shares New Single ‘Boys in the Street’

Multi-platinum-selling singer-songwriter Calum Scott has just shared his brand new single Boys in the Street, an intimate and deeply empathetic cover of a 2015 track from Scottish artist Greg Holden.

Out now via Capitol Records, Boys in the Street is taken from Calum’s highly anticipated sophomore album Bridges, to be released on 17 June. I am loving how intimate this song is, with Calum Scott's powerhouse vocals and impassioned vocal performance being backed by an elegant piano-based production that enhances the raw emotion pouring from his vocals. Boys in the Street is a devastating but ultimately life-affirming account of a father’s struggle to accept his openly gay son. This message is beautifully wrapped around a memorable production that pairs emotive piano chords with lush string work that find Calum gradually taking on a tearful intensity as he narrates the father’s journey toward understanding. Such a gorgeous song packed with so much raw emotion that is impossible not to feel each and every single word being sung.

Accompanying the release, Calum Scott has shared a stark, yet stunning video, directed by Jackson Ducasse (Ellie Goulding, James Bay), which breathes new life into that storytelling, following Calum through empty city streets as he sings directly to the camera and fully embodies the song’s outpouring of emotion. Speaking about the song, Calum Scott said,
‘Boys in the Street’ is one of the few songs that has made me cry on the first listen. I connected to the original version instantly and had wanted to record my own interpretation for the last few years. When I’d finished my second album, I had the time to craft my own version, and immediately got in touch with Greg to ask for his blessing. I knew it would fit perfectly on Bridges, and in some ways was the song I was missing. I’m honoured to include this powerful and inspiring piece on my sophomore record — I know it’s a song that not only I can relate to but will resonate with others around the world.
