California-based, fast-rising indie-pop singer and songwriter Dawson Fuss has just shared his brand new single Never Really Knew, the latest single to be taken from his dynamic, self-affirming EP, edge of adolescence.
I am loving Dawson's passionate and emotive vocal delivery which is packed with raw emotion, effortlessly connecting the listener to his honest, heartfelt storytelling. Never Really Knew is a personal song to Dawson as it touches on the loss of a friend to suicide and how grief is incredibly nuanced and even harder to process when you’re so young. Dawson's silken vocals flow beautifully over delicate piano chords that are nicely paired with subtle beat and cinematic strings which enhance the emotion of his powerful, heartfelt storytelling. Speaking about the song, Dawson Fuss said,
My brain was ignorant of the severity of what I went through, so I held off any kind of grief work. After eventually speaking with a counselor about what I had gone through and my lack of acceptance of it, she recommended I try writing a song about it to begin the processing stage of grief. Once my pencil touched the paper, my thoughts floated from my subconscious to the scratch of the pencil. It was one of the fastest songs I wrote.
