NYIKO, the project of Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, record producer, label owner, visual artist, and actor, has just shared his brand new single Keeping Me Alive, out now via Trailing Twelve Records.
Keeping Me Alive is a song inspired by NYIKO's personal experiences with codependency and addiction and is wrapped up in glistening post-punk slickness. I am really enjoying the tone of his vocals, flowing smoothly over the infectious melodies and beautifully conveying the emotion of his powerful message. Loving the nostalgic synth and guitar tones which are nicely paired with punchy drums and create quite an addictive indie-pop soundscape. It's the bass and guitar riffs that keep me coming back to this song and the chorus is perfect to sing along to. Keeping Me Alive is a dreamy, bold, and energetic slab of retro pop; pining vocals keep a steady pace above driving guitar, rhythmic synths, and bubbly bass. Check it out below!
According to NYIKO, the track was inspired by personal experiences with attachment and addiction. He said,
Without getting into too many details, my partner was suffering from a form of mental illness and her treatment became deeply interwoven with our relationship, resulting in codependency issues. In some ways, I think that the pure nature of being in that relationship was hindering both of our growth.
a relationship or a person can feel like an addiction and that you would be lost without them, even when you know that it’s causing you harm.
it’s a song about coming to terms with the dynamic of a codependent relationship, but not necessarily being ready to call it quits.
